Buying Guide

Herman Miller Aeron vs Embody: Which Should You Buy in Australia? (2026)

If you run hot, sit upright and want the chair that fits the widest range of bodies, buy the Herman Miller Aeron. If you perch forward over a keyboard for long stretches, your lower back dislikes a firm mesh edge, or you want cushioning rather than suspension, buy the Herman Miller Embody. Both are chairs people keep for fifteen years; they simply suit different spines, and twenty minutes in each at a showroom settles it faster than any review.

  • The Aeron comes in three frame sizes covering 142–200 cm, rated to 136 kg (Size A) or 159 kg (Sizes B and C) on Herman Miller's size chart; seat depth is fixed per size.
  • The Embody is one size with a seat depth that adjusts from 38.1 to 45.7 cm and a seat height of 40.6–52.1 cm, rated to 136 kg.
  • Current pricing for the Aeron, the Embody and the Embody Gaming is on each product page.
  • The Embody and Embody Gaming carry a 12-year warranty; our Aeron ships with a 1-year warranty as standard and a 12-Year Warranty Upgrade is available as an add-on.

How do the Aeron and Embody actually support you differently?

The Aeron is a suspension chair. Its 8Z Pellicle is a tensioned mesh with eight zones of different tension, so it is firmer under the sit bones and softer at the edges, and it spreads your weight without any foam. PostureFit SL adds two pads at the base of the back — one for the sacrum, one for the lumbar — that you dial in once. The result feels taut and cool, and it rewards an upright, slightly reclined posture.

The Embody does nearly the opposite. Its backrest is a matrix of hundreds of small plastic pixels carried on a central spine and flexible ribs; each pixel gives way locally where you press, so the surface reshapes as you move. Backfit sets the whole backrest curve to match your spine rather than pushing a pad into one spot. The seat is four layers of elastic suspension and independently moving coils under fabric. It feels softer, more enveloping, and it follows you when you lean forward into a screen — the posture the Aeron tolerates but does not reward.

Which is cooler in an Australian summer?

The Aeron, clearly. Mesh on both seat and back means air moves through the chair constantly, which is why it is the default recommendation for warm rooms and for anyone who runs hot. The Embody's fabric-over-suspension seat holds more heat; the Embody Gaming adds a layer of copper-infused cooling foam that helps, but it is still a warmer chair than an Aeron. If the room has no air-conditioning and you sit through January, that alone can decide it.

Which fits tall, short and heavy people better?

The Aeron fits the widest range because it is three chairs, not one: Size A for roughly 142–163 cm, Size B for 158–183 cm and Size C for 178–200 cm. The trade-off is that seat depth is fixed within each size, so a person between sizes has to choose. Our Aeron size guide explains the checks.

The Embody is one size with a sliding seat (38.1–45.7 cm) and a 40.6–52.1 cm seat height, so it adjusts to most people between about 160 and 190 cm. Very tall sitters find its backrest stops around shoulder height, with no neck support unless you add the Atlas headrest. On weight, the Aeron in Size B or C is rated to 159 kg against the Embody's 136 kg; for heavier users see our big and tall office chairs.

Which is better for back pain?

Neither chair treats back pain, and if you have it, see a physiotherapist first. What a chair can do is remove aggravation, and here the two help different people. If your lower back wants firm, precisely placed support and you sit fairly upright, the Aeron's PostureFit SL does that well. If your pain comes from leaning forward for hours, from a mesh edge pressing into the lumbar, or from a back that changes shape as you shift, the Embody's Backfit and pixelated surface keep contact where a fixed pad loses it.

Which configurations are available, and what does the warranty cover?

At Aussie Chair, Aeron pricing varies by finish and base, and in some finishes by size; Embody pricing varies by finish, and Embody Gaming pricing by colourway. Our price list has every configuration.

Warranty differs. The Embody and Embody Gaming carry a 12-year warranty. Our Aeron ships with a 1-year warranty as standard, and a 12-Year Warranty Upgrade extends cover to casters, pneumatic cylinders, tilt and all moving mechanisms, with the Pellicle mesh covered for the full term. Our guide to how long an Aeron lasts covers wear and cover in detail.

Embody or Embody Gaming?

Ergonomically they are the same chair: same frame, pixelated back, Backfit, tilt and arms. The Gaming version, co-developed with Logitech G, adds the copper-infused cooling foam layer to the seat, uses Sync fabric in gaming colourways, and ships in Black & White, Black & Cyan, Amethyst & White, Galaxy & White and Nightfall & Nova. Choose the Gaming for a softer, cooler seat and the colours; choose the office Embody for a firmer seat and a plainer finish. Both are rated to 136 kg and both carry the 12-year warranty.

So which should you buy?

  • You run hot, or the room does: Aeron.
  • You sit upright or slightly reclined and want firm, dialled-in lumbar support: Aeron.
  • You are under 158 cm or over 190 cm: Aeron in Size A or Size C.
  • You weigh more than 136 kg: Aeron Size B or C.
  • You lean forward into a screen for hours, or game or trade in long sessions: Embody, or Embody Gaming for the cooler seat.
  • Mesh has felt hard on your sit bones or your lower back in other chairs: Embody.
  • You want adjustable seat depth and a 12-year warranty without an add-on: Embody.
  • Budget is the deciding factor: Aeron.

FAQ

Is the Herman Miller Embody better than the Aeron?

Neither is better; they suit different sitters. The Aeron is cooler, fits a wider range of heights and weights across its three sizes. The Embody adjusts seat depth, follows a forward-leaning posture better, feels softer, and includes a 12-year warranty. Sit in both before deciding.

Is the Aeron or Embody better for back pain?

For firm, precisely placed lumbar support in an upright posture, the Aeron's PostureFit SL. For a back that changes shape as you move, or pain from leaning forward for long periods, the Embody's Backfit and pixelated support. A chair reduces aggravation; it does not treat the cause, so see a physiotherapist for persistent pain.

Which is cooler, the Aeron or the Embody?

The Aeron. Its 8Z Pellicle mesh seat and back let air pass through continuously. The Embody's fabric-covered suspension seat holds more heat; the Embody Gaming's copper-infused cooling foam narrows the gap but does not close it.

Does the Embody come in sizes like the Aeron?

No. The Embody is one size with an adjustable seat depth of 38.1–45.7 cm and seat height of 40.6–52.1 cm, which fits most people from about 160 to 190 cm. The Aeron comes in Sizes A, B and C covering 142–200 cm, each with a fixed seat depth.

Where do I find current Aeron and Embody pricing in Australia?

On each product page at Aussie Chair, and on our price list page, which shows every Aeron, Embody and Embody Gaming configuration side by side. The Aeron's 12-Year Warranty Upgrade is listed separately and is added to the same order.

Can I sit in both before buying?

Yes.
